Fringe Preview a $7,000 success

The 2008 Fringe Preview, April 28th at the Lowdnes Shakespeare Center, was a huge success on all accounts. It was an oversold event (we had to add seats) and it raised nearly $7,000 to go toward this year’s festival (which is more money than we ever have brought in before)

There was great media coverage present at the event which services our artists well. This popular event was extra special because former Fringe producer, Chris Gibson, was there to co-host the evening’s events along with Beth Marshall, Genevieve Bernard and Michael Wanize.

producer Beth Marshall interviewed on Smith & Riley Show

Orlando Fringe Producer Beth Marshall was interviewed for the radio show "Smith & Riley." Who is Smith & Riley? Read below:

Reagan has been paired up with his radio partner, Dave, for over 19 years…on-air together they've brought the regular listeners of Central Florida's "Smith & Riley" radio show more than the "typical" dry weekend radio public affairs program. These two broadcast veterans pride themselves on exposing listeners to a wide variety of arts & entertainment artists, authors, community leaders, events and talented, interesting people of all kinds. In other words, they make reflecting their area and its tastes fun to listen to.

Silent Rave Orlando May 24: bring your ipod and dancing shoes

“Dance in the streets. Not your room.”

New York, NY (April 22, 2008), On April 18th 2008 at 6:17pm New York City witnessed one of the newest forms of clubbing that has been sweeping through Europe, a “Silent Rave”, where dancers supply, but don’t share, their music. Many forms of “Silent Raving” can be seen at music festivals such as Coachella and Bonaroo. In New York City’s historic Union Square Park thousands gathered with their iPods, portable CD players, and other forms of mp3 players, and danced until their batteries died. People arrived dressed in business clothes, clearly taking a break or perhaps on their way to work, they sparkled in sequins, or they floated around with a pair of wings. The idea of a “Silent Rave” is show that you should not care what others think and just be yourself. “Dance in the streets, not in your room”, the motto of Jonnie Wesson, the eighteen-year-old Foreign Exchange student who started the NYC gathering.

It is time for Orlando to be a part of the fun. “Silent Rave: Orlando” is able to happen thanks to Beth Marshall, the producer of the Orlando International Fringe Festival. On May 24th, at 5:24pm gather in on the Green with your portable music player of choice, wait for the countdown, then prepare to dance until that little battery of yours dies down! If you are on a break from seeing one of the spectacular shows the Orlando Fringe has to offer, come on over and dance in the field. You can formulate playlists with friends so you can dance together, you can arrive in costume, just be yourself, meet the wonderful people of the Orlando Fringe, promote peace, and just have fun! A “Silent Rave” never has an official end time; the Union Square began at 6:17pm and lasted until close to midnight! Get the word out there! Join the Facebook event page, invite your friends and have a good time! Spread the word!

Canada: New Stage Theatre Festival apps due May 25

The Next Stage Theatre Festival is now accepting applications for its 2009 festival which will run from January 7 to 18 at the Factory Mainspace and Studio Theatres. The application deadline is May 25, 2008 at 11:59 pm. More information and application forms are available at www.nextstagefestival.com.

The Next Stage Theatre Festival is produced by the Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival and aims to complement the summer Fringe by providing another performance opportunity to promising artists. The inaugural Next Stage Festival in 2008 was a great success, selling over 4,500 tickets and drawing lively crowds to its heated outdoor beer tent despite the bitter cold of January.

Unlike the summer Fringe, the Next Stage is a curated event. In 2009, eight companies (not including any site-specific productions that may be accepted) will be chosen to participate based on the merits of a finished script and past artistic successes.

Participant Criteria
To be eligible for The Next Stage Theatre Festival, applicants must have previously produced an artistically successful production in a Canadian Association of Fringe® Festivals’ member festival.

The Festival is interested in projects from emerging and established theatre artists who are developing new work and/or exploring new artistic avenues. Preference will be given to artists who have received artistic or critical success with a previous production and could use this performance opportunity to maintain their artistic momentum. We welcome applications from artists who are exploring new creative frontiers and/or who are creating in one or more of a variety of genres such as theatre, musicals, opera, movement etc.

The Next Stage Theatre Festival has been made possible by assistance from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. For more information please visit our website at www.nextstagefestival.com or call 416-966-1062.
